Celebrate Father’s Day with Time on the Trail

Russell and his dad Bill skiing the Norwegian Birkebeiner together in 2025

With Father’s Day approaching, we’ve been reflecting on the moments that make time with family truly special—like skiing alongside (or trying to keep up with!) the kids you once taught to ski.

As life gets busier and families spread out, it’s not always easy to find more than a weekend here or a dinner there to reconnect. That’s part of what makes a full week of skiing together so memorable. We love hosting families on Lumi trips.

For many fathers, skiing together again with adult kids is a great way to spend time together. This time around, though, no one has to be the trip coordinator or worry about logistics. From transfers to hotel check-ins to the best trailside huts, Lumi handles all the details. That leaves more time for catching up over a morning coffee, cruising the trails together or winding down with a drink and a laugh at the end of the day.

In honor of Father’s Day, we’re excited to share a few photos and highlights from fathers and their adult children from this past winter and before:

Rob and Chris

Rob McKim who traveled with his son Chris on the 2025 France Transju’ trip:

“The balance of group meals and time on our own was just right. I have never traveled with a group before and there was much to appreciate about having many meals already planned. And it was certainly easy enough for anyone to opt out if they wanted to spend time with their family instead.” - Rob

Fannie and Peter

Fannie Watkinson who traveled with her dad Peter on the 2025 Iceland Fossavatn trip:

“Trip leaders were amazing ... and Iceland is such a neat place that I learned so much about from a geographic, historical, and community perspective. The Fossavatnsgangan in Isafjordur was a fantastic centerpiece to this trip and wow the ski community is just the best. The town too was so welcoming, friendly, and had the best post-race cake buffet/fish buffet/singalong that really made me feel like I was a part of the community. Our group was filled with incredible people who I loved getting to know... in addition to time with my dad.” - Fannie

Jon, Tolly and Erik

Brothers Jon and Erik traveled with their dad Tolly on the Lumi trip to the Norwegian Birkebeiner. They had a blast spending time together, skiing the trails and even took a day away from the group to check out their family records in the village of Rena, where the Birken Worldloppet ski marathon starts. Highlights from the trip?

“Skiing at Holmenkollen, Birken and Lillehammer finish area with my Dad and Brother.” - Jon

Jeff and Kevin

Jeff traveled with his son Kevin to Austria & Italy on Lumi’s Dolomitenlauf & Marcialonga trip. Here they are in the Val di Fiemme ski stadium, site of the cross-country ski events for the 2026 Olympic Games, as they prepare for the Marcialonga.

“The Lumi trip could be the best trip I have ever taken… I had the rare opportunity to have our son, Kevin, join me on this trip. Kevin, being a Doctor and raising a young family, his time is valuable to him. We could have not had a better time together. In fact after the Birkie in 2020, he made it into the Elite Classic wave for next year, and credits our Lumi Experience trip for it. He simply said.....I know how the train for the Birkie now...take a Lumi trip. Thank you for a wonderful experience.” - Jeff

Kristy and Bill

Kristy, an owner of New Moon Ski Shop, traveled with her dad Bill on the Lumi trip to the 2023 World Championships in Planica, Slovenia. Bill speaks fluent Slovenian and Kristy spent time in Slovenia (then Yugoslavia) with her dad when she was growing up. A few highlights?

“Everything - it was such a special trip with wonderful people.” - Kristy

Matt and Bill

Bill and his son Matt traveled to the 2019 World Championships in Seefeld, Austria with Lumi. Here they are rodeling (Austria’s version of sledding) with Lumi trip leader Holly in-between watching world-class racing.

“It was the trip of a lifetime. Everything ran smoothly, the people, food, and skiing were amazing.” - Matt

Egan and Chris

Egan traveled with his parents Chris and Judy, also owners of New Moon Ski Shop, to the 2023 World Championships in Planica, Slovenia. It was Egan’s first trip to Europe and he got to add stamps from Italy and Slovenia to his passport. Here they are at the Planica Nordic Center cheering Jessie Diggins and the US Team to victory in the 10 km Freestyle event.

“Amazing experience in all respects - local history, cusine, the race events, skiing and other outdoor activities - all were completely fulfilling” - Chris

Be sure to check out some of the highlights with moms too!
