Sight-Skiing in Slovenia

Lumi guests enjoying views at Monte Lussari

The Slovenia Sight-Skiing group visits Monte Lussari

This week guests kicked off their time in Slovenia on Lumi’s Slovenia Sight-Skiing trip. With no races to prepare for, guests are simply here for the pleasure of good food, comfortable accommodations and the chance to ski and explore the Julian Alps. Read on for some views from this year’s trip. But first, a recap from our time at the American Birkie.

The Birchleggers Descend

The Kuzzy family came out in force to represent Lumi

The Birkie is a special gathering place for cross-country skiers from around the country and the world, and nowhere is that more true than at the Expo prior to the main event. Guest Communications Manager Nathan, Garrott’s sister Laura and dad Jim represented Lumi at this year’s Birkie Expo where thousands of racers passed by over two days.

They chatted with new and old friends as well as many Lumi guests, including several just returning stateside from Lumi’s Finland & Estonia trip which wrapped up barely 48 hours earlier! It’s always fun to hear how skiers' trips went and answer questions from others eagerly packing for their trips to Norway or Austria & Switzerland.

Fun in the Julian Alps

Guests on Lumi’s Slovenia Sight-Skiing trip are taking in the sights this week as they explore the Julian Alps, located near the intersection of Slovenia, Austria and Italy. Based in the quiet community of Rateče, the group has spent the better part of the week relaxing and enjoying the scenery on skis.

Skiing and Sightseeing at Planica

Trip Leader Matija explaining the ski jumps at Planica Nordic Center

Learning about the ski jumps at the Planica Nordic Center

The group started off on the right foot with a visit to Planica, home to the 2023 Nordic World Championships. Conditions were excellent thanks to cool overnight temperatures setting up the trails nicely. The perfect blue skies certainly helped too! Trip leader Matija shared many insights about the array of massive ski jumps located in the valley and the history of every road, mountain and building, having spent his life in the area. His deep local knowledge is well appreciated as guests learn about this often overlooked corner of the world.

Winter Magic in Kranjska Gora

A winter evening in Kranjska Gora is pure magic

Kronska Gora is a joy to explore on a winter evening

Exploring the community of Kranska Gora was a special treat. Downtown was still decorated in its holiday best as ice skaters practiced on a local rink, making for an enchanting evening walk to delicious restaurants with their new companions.

Hidden Trails at Saisera

Guests awoke to another beautiful day and traveled over the Italian border to ski the Saisera trails. Surrounded on three sides by the imposing - yet beautiful - Julian Alps, these trails are a true hidden gem.

Monte Lussari Views & History

Snow-covered street in Monte Lussari, Julian Alps

The village of Monte Lussari in the Julian Alps features a single snow-filled street

No trip to the Julian Alps would be complete without a visit to Monte Lussari near Tarvisio. Pilgrims have visited this special place for centuries, hiking the nearly 1000m elevation change along a series of paths still in use today. Tired legs from the day’s skiing meant guests took the gondola to the top where lunch and expansive views awaited.

Sledding Fun

Lumi guests take to the slopes for some sledding fun!

Grab a sled and feel like a kid again!

Later in the week, guests took to the slopes for a different type of winter activity: sledding. After eating lunch at a trailside hut, guests cruised down a 5-km trail to the base of the mountain. Post-ski (and sled) saunas are mandatory for this crew and today was no exception.
