Thursday - Lillehammer & Sjusjøen

Skiing in Sjusjøen
Enjoy a full day of skiing on the Sjusjøen plateau’s seemingly endless trails.

From 6:30 AM - Breakfast
Good morning! Breakfast is available from 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM at your hotel. After breakfast travel by bus up to the Sjusjøen plateau. Because there will be some walking from the trail back to your hotel (~ 1 km), we recommend having overboots or carrying shoes in a small backpack when you are skiing around Lillehammer.

Today’s Ski Recommendation
Today is your day to enjoy skiing on the Sjusjøen plateau. This seemingly endless network of trails awaits you. Enjoy lunch at one of several restaurants along the trail or grab a bite once you’re back in Lillehammer.

Directions from Aksjemollen Hotel to Sjusjøen plateau:

Walk from your hotel to “Lillehammer skysstasjon,” the shuttle bus station. It’s only 300m away, right across from the train station. Take a public bus (line 501) from Lillehammer to Sjusjøen. The journey takes about 36 mins. Get off at the “Sjusjøen langrennsarena”.

Buses depart from Lillehammer Bus Station at 9:20 AM, 11:20 AM and 1:20 PM.

The reception at your hotel has bus passes for you. These are valid for all of your travels to Sjusjoen and back to Lillehammer during your trip.

Trail Description
Start your ski in the Sjusjøen Cross Country (Langrenn) Stadium. We recommend skiing the extension option (in blue) to explore some of the trails on the plateau (~8 km additional). Since you have all day to ski, we recommend including the extension. Feel free to ski more than that or explore different trails — it’s your vacation! — this is simply one recommendation.

Blue Loop to Midfjellet (~10 km) of flat skiing on the Sjusjøen plateau

Start by skiing the on the Birkebeiner Løype (trail) from Sjusjøen toward Rena. This is the opposite direction as the racers travel in the famous Norwegian ski marathon, the be trail goes in two directions, so you can ski this loop either clockwise or counterclockwise. We recommend skiing counter-clockwise, as you can orient yourself on the Birken trail better.

We recommend taking the trail to Midtfjellkoia (Midtfjel = Middle Mountain, Koia = cabin), the Middle-mountain Cabin. Midtfjellkoia is open intermittently, if you are lucky to arrive when they are open, they serve the Norwegian classic: waffles with brown cheese. They update their Facebook site and hours of operation in the morning on the days when they’re open: Midtfjellkoia. It’s unlikely that they’ll be open during your trip.

Lunch Recommendations
If you are ready for lunch already, the Låven Bar (Barn Bar) restaurant in Sjusjøen offers an apres-ski feel with burgers, beer and a warm restroom. It is one of the few restaurants available in Sjusjøen. You may also wish to wait and grab a bite once you make it down to Lillehammer for lunch.

Bus from Sjusjøen to Lillehammer
In case you decide to take the bus from Sjusjøen to Lillehammer to end your ski day where you started, take the bus “501” back from the “Sjusjøen langrennsarena” station. The journey takes about 35 mins and you can get off at “Lillehammer Skysstasjon”. From there you can walk back to your hotel the same way as you did in the morning.

Busses depart from the “Sjusjøen langrennsarena” Bus Station at 2:06 PM, 4:06 PM and 5:06 PM.

Dinner
After a long day outside enjoy another dinner on your own at one of the many Restaurants in Lillehammer.

God natt!
