Sight-Skiing in Iceland’s West Fjord’s Region

Northern lights dance across the ski above Reykjavik

Sightseeing in beautiful new places is a central feature of every Lumi trip, offering guests the chance to relax after skiing  or perhaps even participating in a Worldloppet event. Nowhere is this more true than on Lumi’s Iceland - Fossavatn trip. Bonus experiences abound as guests explore the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik and the wild terrain of the Westfjords region. From cascading waterfalls to deep fjords ringed by high peaks, volcanic craters and expansive ocean views, there are ample opportunities to immerse yourself in the culture, and geothermal hot springs, of this remote island nation. And with direct flights available from multiple airports throughout North America, reaching Iceland is easier than ever.

A Landscape Unlike Anywhere Else

What makes sightseeing on Lumi’s Iceland trip so special? Although Iceland’s landscape is not as imposing as the mountain ranges found in the Austrian Alps or the Italian Dolomites, what it lacks in scale it makes up for with an ever-evolving geology. This is a landscape that changes subtly (and occasionally dramatically) from year to year. Its glaciers churn across volcanic plains, while lava flows create new layers over which rivers pour and geothermal pools seep. Skiing across this treeless landscape is a constant reminder that the ground beneath your feet may not have existed just a few generations ago. That communities have survived here for hundreds of years is a testament to the tenacity of the Icelandic people, in the face of this challenging, transformative landscape.

Ski Iceland's imposing glacially carved landscape

Lumi’s trip begins in Reykjavik, a capital city that has the feel of a Scandinavian village with its colorful houses and pedestrian streets overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Iceland’s southwestern corner. Guests then head north on a two-day bus tour of the Westfjords region on the way to Ísafjörður, with stops along the way to visit several of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls, marvel at the rugged fjords and the impressive Grábrók volcanic crater. Drive time each day is around 3-4 hours on winding, undeveloped roads, with frequent stops to explore the barren landscape and hike the scenic trails. Trip leaders share their stories and knowledge of the region along the way, offering context to the scenery and customs of Iceland.

In Ísafjörður, settle in for several days of skiing and sightseeing in this quiet, picturesque fishing village near Iceland’s northern extremity. Everything is within walking distance of Lumi’s hotel, making it easy to get around this tightly-knit community. A near-total lack of light pollution coupled with a new moon during Lumi’s 2026 trip means the night sky will be particularly dark – perfect conditions for viewing the northern lights if they make an appearance, as they have for Lumi guests the past two years.

Keen on racing? For many, a highlight of the trip is participating in the Fossavatn, the final Worldloppet event of the season. Here you can read more about the Fossavatn Ski Marathon experience from Lumi’s blog.

It’s hard to believe that it’s still possible to ski in mid-April, let alone at sea level.  The picturesque Fossavatn event is a unique race that welcomes participants into the special community of Ísafjörður. The icing on the cake for this trip is literally the Cake Buffet following the race, where residents of the community bake hundreds of cakes to share with participants, including several variations of Iceland’s famous Happy Marriage Cake, a rhubarb-crisp like cake that is a perfect finish to a long ski. As if that’s not enough, the festivities continue with a popular end-of-season party featuring local seafood, an awards ceremony, music and dancing. It’s a wonderful way to wrap up a visit to Ísafjörður before beginning the journey back to Reykjavik the next morning.
