Today is your last full day in Italy. Recommended options for today include cross country skiing toward beyond San Candido, exploring Brunico (Bruneck) or alpine skiing in Cortina.
For cross country skiing, we recommend skiing eastward today, back towards San Candido. From there, you can ski either on the flat “Grenzloipe” or “border trail” that takes you across the Italian - Austrian border. Another option is to head south from San Candido and head into the “Fischleintal” or “little fish valley.” The trail is mostly an out-and-back and takes you to past several small villages with a number of options for lunch.
Alternatively, today could be a good day to take a rest from cross country skiing and head to Brunico, about 30 minutes by train from Toblach. Use the transportation pass given to you by the hotel for free travel on this train. The exact times can be found on the Austrian Rail Website or in the paper timetable. Sometimes the Austrian Rail website does not include all trains, so the paper timetable may have more train options and is still reliable.
The train to Brunico departs from Toblach every half hour from 6:55 am to 6:55 pm on the :55 and :25.
The train arrives in Brunico every half hour on the :29 and :59 (do not get off at Bruneck Nord; wait for the Brunico/Bruneck stop).
Brunico is the largest town in the Pusteria Valley and offers a cobbled pedestrian village center, good for exploring and shopping. The “can’t-miss” highlight in Brunico is the Messner Mountain Museum: Ripa. It is one of six museums in South Tyrol curated by renowned alpinist, Reinhold Messner. The MMM Ripa museum is located in the old castle overlooking Brunico and a short 15 minute walk from the train station. The museum is open from Noon until 6:00 p.m. every day (closed Tuesdays). We recommend at least two hours for the museum visit, and could easily spend closer to three.
The exact train schedule from Brunico to Toblach can be found on the Austrian Rail website or the paper timetable.
The train to Toblach departs from Brunico every half hour from 6:30 am to 8:30 pm on the :00 and :30.
The train arrives in Toblach every half hour on the :06 and :36.
